With a curious tilt of the head and an expression that seems to ask a question, Well, Hello! is a characterful watercolour portrait celebrating the personality of one of our most familiar countryside birds.

I was immediately drawn to the contrast between the goose's beautifully soft white plumage and that wonderfully vibrant orange bill. Rather than adding a detailed setting, I chose to leave plenty of white space around the subject, allowing the expression — and personality — to take centre stage.

The result is a simple, contemporary piece with a gentle sense of humour: understated enough for a calm interior, but with just enough character to make you smile whenever you pass it.

Well, Hello! began as an original hand-painted watercolour, created using delicate washes and subtle layers of colour to capture the softness of the feathers and those wonderfully inquisitive eyes.
