The Songbird | Original Mixed Media Robin Art

Where art, nature and music meet

Few garden visitors are quite as recognisable – or as welcome – as the robin.

The Songbird celebrates not only the distinctive beauty of this much-loved bird, but something else that makes it so special: its song.

Painted by hand in watercolour, the robin's brilliant orange-red breast creates a vivid focal point against softer washes of blue-grey and earthy brown.

But look more closely and another layer emerges.

Vintage musical notation runs through the painting, becoming part of the artwork itself and creating a visual connection between the bird we see and the song we associate with it.

Rather than simply sitting behind the robin, the music passes across and through the image, bringing together painting, typography and printed ephemera in a contemporary mixed-media composition.

A celebration of the British robin

The robin has become one of Britain's most familiar and much-loved birds. Its distinctive appearance and beautiful song make an encounter feel special, however often we see one.

The Songbird was created to capture a little of that connection.

The juxtaposition of expressive watercolour and aged musical notation gives the artwork a nostalgic quality while the uncluttered composition keeps it fresh and contemporary.
