With ears standing proudly to attention and an expression somewhere between curiosity and quiet amusement, this characterful donkey appears to have popped into view simply to find out what's going on.

Originally painted by hand in watercolour, I wanted this portrait to feel spontaneous and full of life rather than overly formal. Loose washes of smoky blue-grey, charcoal and soft earthy tones build the form of the face, while finer drawn details bring expression to the eyes, muzzle and wonderfully oversized ears.

The simple white background was a deliberate choice. There's nowhere for the subject to hide – and with a face like this, why would you want it to?

The result is a contemporary animal portrait with warmth, humour and just a little mischief.
